This 2 day course begins with the fundamentals of pistol mounted optics (red dot, green dot, blue dot), how they work as opposed to iron sights, how to take advantage of the benefits and how to avoid or adapt to the rare issues you may encounter. This isn't just about optics, though. We refine your stance, grip, breathing, and the other shooting fundamentals that will bring your shooting skills to a whole new level.
In this course we go over the following topics:
Different styles of optics
How to zero your optic
Cleaning optics
Replacing the battery
Choosing holsters
Using a weapon mounted light with optics
Drawing from concealment
Finding the dot from low ready and the holster
Finding the dot after each shot
Identifying and sighting in on target with the dot
Malfunctions such as battery or device failure
Loss of use of the sights entirely (optics full of mud or broken off)
Height of red dot over bore
Shooting from cover
Most training will be on simulators, with approximately four to six hours of live fire spread out over the two days.
You must be able to safely load and unload the firearm of your choice, and you must be familiar with its operation. While this is not a beginner course, you don't have to be a great shot, or even a good shot. Can't hit the broadside of a barn? You let me worry about barns, you focus on the course, and you'll impress yourself at the end!
If you don't have everything you need, or you're not certain, contact me before giving up! Most every problem can be solved.
What to bring:
Closed toe shoes, long pants, and high neck shirt
Gun with mounted red dot sight (does not need to be zeroed)
200 rounds of ammunition (may be purchased at the range)
Serviceable hip holster and belt
Eye protection - Glasses will usually suffice (can be rented at the range)
Ear protection (I have earplugs if needed)
Enthusiasm!
A word about guns and holsters:
If you don't have a red dot on your gun, contact me. Rentals and/or loaners may be available.
Holsters! If you wish to carry with an appendix holster, cross draw holster, fanny pack or purse holster, or some other method that isn't a hip holster, that's great! We will certainly train with that. However, a hip holster is a requirement for this course, both for the simulator and live fire, as hip holsters are the only ones allowed on the range. If you don't have one, contact me. I have a limited number of suitable holsters to loan.
Range and classroom fees are included in the price.
If you have a court order or your attorney advised you to attend a firearm safety class, this is it. This is a non-shooting course where you will learn how to safely handle and store firearms to prevent access by unauthorized people, namely children. I've kept the price as low as I can because I know what it's like to be under legal scrutiny.
In this course we go over the following topics without judgment:
The Universal Safety Rules for handling guns.
Unloading and clearing pistols, revolvers, and long guns.
Safe and secure storage and transportation of guns and ammunition.
Safe storage and transportation of less lethal weapons (taser, pepper spray)
How to react when your kiddos inevitably see you're guns.
Any other topics that pertain to your individual situation.
Still not ready to shoot a real gun? Still working up the nerve to go to a gun range? This course gives you the opportunity to get comfortable operating and shooting a gun, but without a real gun, at your own pace. You can practice safe gun handling and drawing from a holster, as well as refine your stance, grip, trigger control, and sight picture with a coach, all using a simulator. Take as much or as little time as you need to build your confidence, take as many breaks as you like, and have fun!
This is Range Day without the range.
The No's:
No range fees, no costly ammunition, no cleaning guns, no hassle of transporting guns, no bad weather, no hot weather, no dirt or mud, and no danger.
The Yes's:
Wide choice of targets, moving targets, dueling trees, real life scenarios, shoot/don't-shoot scenarios, and zombies!
